ARTIST STATEMENT
The found image present in the work is from research surrounding The Watts riots, sometimes referred to as the Watts Rebellion, which took place in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, 1965. The image contradicts, yet is reminiscent of, a cliche postcard / greeting card one might send or receive from a beautiful place like Los Angeles. Amongst the ignorance and despair, I also found in this short, inviting sentence so much hope.

There is the sea. I was so sure. I met our colors here yesterday.
They are so tender.
In god they trust, thats what they have written down on their one doller bill.
Give me light.
Please see you soon.
It is so beautiful here,
your friend.

– Malte Zenses

ARTIST BIO
Malte Zenses is a German artist who lives and works in Berlin. With ironic nonchalance, his work expands the vocabulary of abstract painting and new realism by pointedly integrating the zeitgeist of his generation through autobiographical fragments. Precisely placed letters and characters become ciphers of experiences behind what is visible. Since the beginning of his studies, Zenses has exhibited his projects around the world - most recently in Cologne, Hamburg, Lucerne, Nuremberg, Los Angeles and New York. He has been studying at the Kunstakdemie Düsseldorf under Andreas Schulze since 2014. Zenses previously studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach under Wolfgang Luy.

German b. 1987, Solingen, based in Berlin
